MIAMI (CBSMiami) - Pembroke Pines police are mourning the loss of retired K-9 who served on the force for more than six years.

During his time with the department Shak, along with his handler Sergeant Adam Feiner, assisted in the confiscation of over $686,000 in drug-related currency and took part in 117 public demonstrations and special events.

The K-9 was also credited with 44 criminal apprehensions.

His love for police work was immeasurable. While on patrol, he brought much credit to the agency and even more value to the community. But most importantly, he was the greatest protector and companion that I could know, and he will never be forgotten," said Feiner in a statement.

Feiner made the difficult decision to euthanize Shak after health issues began to affect his quality of life.
