FORT LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami) – One person is dead and two others were rushed to the hospital after a boating accident late Saturday night, Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue said.

The accident happened just before 8 p.m. on the Intracoastal Waterway in Fort Lauderdale.

According to Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officers, two boats were traveling together when one of those boats, a 20-foot recreational open motor boat, hit a concrete dock.

There were four passengers on the boat, three males and one female.

One of the males, 24-year-old Dalton Shirley, was ejected from the boat and has passed away, according to FWC.

They also said one male was uninjured, one male was transported to Broward Health Medical Center and has since been released and the female remains in the hospital.

The female, whose name has yet to be released, remains in serious condition according to Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue.

Fort Lauderdale Police and FWC investigators were at the scene, located at near NE 38th Street, working to determine exactly how it happened.

"Fort Lauderdale Police has loaned us there crime scene unit to photograph the scene. We've got the dock, multiple boats, multiple people involved to really piece together what happened," said FWC Officer Liz Barraco. "So it's going to be a long process, but we're going to work really hard to find out what happened here tonight."

FWC says there were 10 people total between the two boats.

It's not clear whether the second boat was involved in the crash in any way or whether the two boats were simply traveling together.

There was no damage to the second boat and no injuries sustained by those on board, according to FWC.
