FORT LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami) — Police are looking for a man who tried robbing someone leaving a gas station early Thursday morning.

Police said they got a call around 3 a.m. for a shooting at the Marathon gas at 3090 Sunrise Boulevard.

Broward sheriff's investigators said a man was leaving the station's store when he was approached by someone nearby.

"That person tried to rob him and fired shots at him. Fortunately for the victim, he was able to get away," said sheriff's spokeswoman Joy Oglesby.

CBS4's Amber Diaz said evidence markers on the ground in front the gas station store marked three bullet casings.

The injured man jumped in his car and drove to an apartment complex about five minutes away on NW 7th Street. Chopper4 spotted the man's car, it had a bullet hole in the rear window. He was taken to Broward Health Medical Center. The sheriff's office said he's expected to be okay.

"Detectives at this point are interviewing witnesses, they're collecting physical evidence, they're looking for surveillance video that may be available so we'll have a better picture of who we're looking for," said Oglesby.

The gas station attendant told CBS4 that this was not the first shooting to happen there. He said he recognized the victim but not the person who tried to rob him.

If you have any information you're asked to Crime Stoppers at (954) 493-TIPS.
