North Miami Mayor Trying To Stop Deportation Of Thousands Of Haitians

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – North Miami Mayor Smith Joseph is urging others both in South Florida and across Miami-Dade County to join in an effort to get the Obama Administration to reconsider its new policy that will see the deportation of thousands of Haitians living in the United States.
Tuesday night Joseph presented an emergency resolution at a city council meeting that was unanimously passed which urges other municipalities and counties in the state of Florida, as well as the United States Conference of Mayors, to join North Miami in its efforts to stop the deportation from happening.
On Wednesday Joseph will hold a press conference at City Hall in North Miami to provide insight into the resolution and encourage other cities to pass similarly strong resolutions.
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security will soon begin the removals of Haitian people, citing the improving conditions in Haiti.
North Miami has one of the largest Haitian communities in the state of Florida and Mayor Joseph has called on members of the community to reach out to their respective senators and representatives to demand action and reverse the decision.
Joseph believes that Haiti is not stable enough to absorb an influx of Haitian deportees.
