'I Want The Truth To Be Told': Mother Pleads For Answers One Year After Maame Amuah's Murder

MIAMI (CBSMiami) - A mother says she is still waiting for justice, one year after her daughter was murdered in a Downtown Miami high-rise apartment.

On May 6, 2021, 26-year-old Maame Amuah was found shot in the neck in her apartment in the Caoba building.

Her mother, Jonell Jackson, recounts the moment last year she received the devastating news.

"My son called, and he said 'Mom, police say Maame was shot last night.'"

Jackson said she was on the phone with her daughter just an hour before she was killed.

"I had just spoken to her that night because it was two days before Mother's Day, and I had bought us tickets to go on a Mother's Day boat cruise," Jackson said through tears.

She said Amuah had moved to South Florida at the start of the pandemic, and she was designing her own clothing line and eyelash line after studying to be a beautician.

According to the Miami Police Department report from that night, the 911 call came in around 1:30 a.m. The report mentions a witness— whose name was redacted— kneeling by Amuah, saying "I love you" and "please breathe."

"I want the truth to be told," Jackson said. "I want to know what went on. I know it's not going to bring my daughter back."

Jackson said she is convinced her daughter's killer was someone she knew.

"Somebody had to allow you to go in that building. You can't just go in that building without you having a key or somebody allowing you to go in," she explained.

One person was detained for questioning, but no one has been arrested for the crime.

"Somebody took her life," said Jackson. "And the person that took her life is walking around like nothing happened."

We reached out to Miami Police to learn the status of the case. They say our request was sent to the Homicide Unit.
