RAMROD KEY (CBSMiami) – A mother and her two small children died in a house fire in Ramrod Key on Sunday.
Monroe County investigators said the fire spread so quickly they were unable to get inside and save 46-year-old Robin Ferrer and her two children, 7-year-old Roman and 5-year-old Hazel.
The second story is so badly burned it left nothing but a charred shell.
Donna Wilson lives two homes down and said the entire neighborhood watched in horror as the fire ripped thru the home just before 1 a.m. Sunday.
"The second floor up was nothing but fire. So the whole roof went up. They went in and tried to save the people," said Wilson.
According to Monroe Countey Sheriff's Office, neighbors and other family members joined rescue teams in an attempt to save those in the burning home but the flames and smoke was too much.
Ferrer's older son Jacob Shores, 18, was burned badly while attempting to save his family and was airlifted to Ryder Trauma Center in Miami.
Courtney Shores, 19, also attempted to save her family but did not sustain any injuries.
Wilson said the loss is still unthinkable.
"I can't imagine as a mother. The poor father was on the ground. The firemen had to hold him down cause he wanted to go get them," said Wilson.
The State Fire Marshal and Sheriff's Major Crimes detectives are investigating the cause of the deadly fire.
