Minimum Wage Increase Has Broad Bipartisan Support In Florida
TALLAHASSEE (CBSMiami) – Not many political issues enjoy a broad base of bipartisan support, but one such issue in the state of Florida is raising the minimum wage.
According to a Quinnipiac Poll, 73 percent of Floridians support raising the minimum wage, while 24 percent oppose such a measure. The proposal enjoys broad support among Democrats (93-6 percent) and majority support from Republicans (53-44 percent).
Overall, Floridians said raising the minimum wage will not lead businesses to cut jobs by a margin of 51-43 percent.
Florida's $7.93 minimum wage is higher than the federal $7.25 minimum wage. President Barack Obama supports legislation that would increase the federal minimum wage to $10.10. Democratic gubernatorial candidates Charlie Crist and Nan Rich also have supported an increase as they seek to unseat incumbent Republican Gov. Rick Scott.
The new poll was conducted from Jan. 22 to Jan. 27 and has a margin of error of 2.5 percentage points.
