Miami ranks 4th best in nation for Halloween, Wallethub found

MIAMI - The spookiest night of the year is right around the corner and Miami has been ranked one of the best places in the nation to celebrate it.

According to Wallethub, for 2023 Miami is the fourth best spot for Halloween out of the country's 100 largest cities. The Miami-based personal finance company said it got high scores for walkability, Halloween costume stores per capita, and candy and chocolate stores per capita. It also scored in the middle of the pack when it came to the crime rate.

So who got the top spot?

Number one is New York. It's followed Las Vegas and Los Angeles. Rounding out the top 5 is Jersey City, New Jersey.

Hialeah came in ninth, Orlando came in 24th, Tampa was 29th, St Petersburg was 85th, and Jacksonville was 87th.

According to Wallethub, "U.S. household is expected to spend $108.24 on Halloween expenses, from decorations to treats to costumes. Collectively, that's about $12.2 billion between the 73% of households that celebrate. If you're counting on getting more free treats in return for your investment, you'll definitely want to be in a place with the most activities."

Of the $12 billion-plus that will be spent, $3.6 billion will go toward candy and $4.1 billion will be spent on costumes.

  • 84% of Americans who buy Halloween candy will be picking up chocolate
  • 83% of parents check their child's candy for anything dangerous
  • 68% of Americans plan to hand out candy to trick or treaters
  • 60% of parents will help themselves to their children's candy haul
  • 57% of Americans said they would consider purchasing a haunted house to live in
  • 53% of Americans decorate their homes
  • 50% of Americans plan to dress in costumes
  • 34% of parents think 13 or 14 is old enough to trick or treat alone
  • 32% of Americans will throw or attend a Halloween party
