MIAMI (CBSMiami) -- City of Miami police swarmed a little Havana neighborhood Tuesday.

A perimeter had been set up blocking several streets. Residents were told to stay indoors and those wanting to cross were told to stay away they searched for a suspect.

According to police this all began on SW. 12th Ave. and 7th Street where a woman's purse was snatched as she stood outside of a market just before 6 a.m.

"Fortunately, we had officers in the area that were vigilant and were able to pick up that vehicle. There was a short pursuit," said Chief Jorge Colina of City of Miami Police.

A few blocks away on NW. 10th Ave. and 4th Street, police said three suspects in that vehicle - two males and a female bailed out of the car.

"We did have an officer who discharged his firearm. Fortunately, no one was struck. No one was injured," said Chief Colina.

According to police, one of the suspects was quickly detained outside the vehicle. The female suspect was just a few feet away but the third managed to get away.

More than a dozen officers were called out and a perimeter was set up. A short time later, they detained the third suspect who police say was hiding within the perimeter.

"Our objective - we want to make Miami the safest city in America. The officers are being hyper vigilant we have additional officers on the street. We have expanded some of our tactical units and this is a byproduct of what happens when you are out in the street trying to do your job," Chief Colina.
