Local leaders speak out against 'Day of hate'

BAL HARBOR -- A hateful video of an anti-Semitic verbal attack near Orlando is going viral.

"It's maddening, it angers me that we're living in a time when these things are happening," said Gabriel Groisman, a local Jewish rights activist

Groisman says he was disgusted with the video and by the "Day of hate" being pushed on social media.

White supremacists on social media say on Saturday, they'll target the Jewish community.

"So I'm calling on a weekend of Jewish pride. This weekend, I'm asking Jewish men,  to put on their kippahs, women and everyone else, put on a Star of David. It's a weekend to be visibly Jewish," said Groisman in a video he posted online.

Local leaders are also speaking out against hate.

"I can tell you, I'm speaking on behalf of the residents of the City of Hialeah, we not only promote love, but we stand by our Jewish brothers and sisters," said Esteban Bovo, Mayor of Hialeah.

"There is no place for hate of any kind in Miami-Dade County. We stand firmly with our Jewish friends and neighbors who are targeted by the organizers of this event," said Daniella Levine Cava, Mayor of Miami-Dade County.

Enhanced police presence is seen outside of local synagogues to ensure security.

The Jewish community, now asking their neighbors to step up, and stop the hate.

"I exist because non-Jewish people were upstanders and hid my grandparents. I exist personally because people who didn't have to, stepped up and did the right thing," said Michael Igel, board chair at the Florida Holocaust Museum.

Local law enforcement says they will remain vigilant and will not tolerate any acts of hate.
