MIAMI (CBSMiami) – "Who's gonna watch a debate between the two Cuban guys – Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz. Who cares?"

That comment from MSNBC host Chris Matthews about Thursday's presidential debate has Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez fuming.

The mayor sent Matthews a letter. It read, in part:

"As a proud Cuban-American and the Mayor of a county with the largest population of Cuban-Americans in the United Sates, I was deeply offended by your distasteful remarks about tonight's Republican debate."

Mayor Gimenez went on to tell Matthews his "comments displayed bigotry and ignorance about nationality."

The mayor also said he did not expect Matthews to apologize.

But Matthews did.

"It sounded like I was putting them down. I'm sorry I said it, that's it," he said.

So far, Matthews' bosses at MSNBC have not said anything publicly about this issue.
