KEY WEST (CBSMiami) – Miami-Dade County Commissioner Jose 'Pepe' Diaz was arrested in Key West on Saturday night.

Diaz, 55, has been charged with drunk driving after being pulled over for speeding shortly after 8 p.m. He was going 74 miles per hour in a 30 miles per hour zone, according to authorities.

The incident took place at 3100 North Roosevelt Boulevard. Diaz was driving his Harley Davidson motorcycle.

Key West had been hosting the Key West Poker Run, an annual motorcycle event that draws thousands of bikers to the southernmost point of Florida.

According to police, when Diaz was stopped his motorcycle fell to the ground as he failed to put his kickstand down, prompting officers to begin a DUI investigation.

Diaz was elected in 2002.

UPDATE:

Diaz released the following statement on Sunday afternoon.

Under advice of my legal counsel, I cannot discuss details at this time. However, I look forward to resolving this matter. In the meantime, I will continue to serve my community and the residents of District 12 as I have done for the last 24 years and I humbly ask for your patience during this time.
