Memorial Day mass shooting: Three suspects still at large, two held on gun charges

FORT LAUDERDALE -- Police in Hollywood said Tuesday that they are searching for three suspects in connection with a Memorial Day mass shooting on the Hollywood Broadwalk that left at least nine innocent bystanders hurt, including several children.

Two suspects were in custody but they were being held on firearms charges, according to police.

There have been no fatalities reported so far but multiple people were rushed to Memorial Regional Hospital and Joe DiMaggio Childrens Hospital, according to a written statement by police.

There were nine victims who were wounded, and four of them were juveniles ranging in age from 1 to 17.

The adult victims ranged in age from 25 to 65, police said. Information about their conditions was not immediately released.

According to police, a dispute between two groups of people erupted into gunfire, sending dozens of panicked people in the crowd running and ducking for cover.

Kayla Puzon was staying at a condo just step away the bullets began to fly. "From what I heard 5 shots went off. You're immediately in shock, luckily we're right here we can run into our room and just lock the door," she said.

Surveillance video from the scene showed a man wearing a yellow hoody pull out a gun and start firing before he ran from the scene.

The other man identified by police was wearing a gray sweatshirt and black pants and who appeared to be holding a weapon. And police are looking for a third man who was dressed in all black carrying a distinctive back pack.

Police said in a written statement that the two suspects who were in custody were wanted on firearms charges. They were not immediately identified.

Police said they recovered five handguns from the scene, including a stolen weapon from Texas and another reported stolen from Miami-Dade.

Hollywood Mayor Josh Levy said immediately after the shooting that he was dismayed by the violence, saying it was "beyond reckless" for those involved to start shooting in a crowd surrounded by innocent bystanders.

"For people to come in and suddenly start shooting at people in broad daylight, who does that? You wonder what kind of people our society is raising," Levy asked.

"It is completely unacceptable that innocent people spending time with family on a holiday weekend have been affected by a shooting altercation between two groups who came into our city with guns and no regard for the safety of the law abiding public around them," Levy said in a written statement Tuesday. "Law enforcement agencies are fully engaged in their investigation, and I assure you that no stone will be left unturned in bringing the perpetrators to justice."

Anyone with information about the two people or anyone with video or pictures from the shooting were asked to call the Hollywood Police Department at 954-764-4357.
