Marlins' Stanton Agrees To $6.5 Million For 2014
MIAMI (AP) — Miami Marlins slugger Giancarlo Stanton has avoided arbitration by agreeing to a $6.5 million, one-year contract
The team also reached one-year agreements Friday with relievers Steve Cishek for $3.8 million and Mike Dunn for $1.4 million. Both had been eligible for arbitration.
Stanton was arbitration-eligible for the first time. He made $537,000 last year and received a hefty raise despite a disappointing season interrupted by injury, batting a career-low .249 with 24 home runs and 74 RBIs.
Stanton is a frequent subject of trade speculation, and the thrifty Marlins haven't offered the right fielder a long-term deal. He has 117 homers in his four major-league seasons and is only 24.
Cishek had a career-high 34 saves in 36 chances last year with an ERA of 2.33.
