Marlins Interleague Win Streak Ends In 6-0 Shutout Loss To Rangers
ARLINGTON (CBSMiami) – The Miami Marlins had won thirteen consecutive games against the American League but couldn't extend the streak on Wednesday, falling to the Texas Rangers 6-0. A win would've given the Marlins the MLB record for the longest interleague winning streak. Instead Miami will be tied with the 2003-2004 New York Yankees and 2004 Tampa Bay Devil Rays for the longest such streak.
The Marlins are now 8-1 against the AL so far in 2014. They will play eleven more interleague games this season against Oakland, Houston, Texas and Anaheim.
Christian Yelich was coming off one of his best hitting games in the majors, collecting a career-high four hits and four RBI's on Tuesday night. He led off the game with a walk for Miami and advanced to second base on a wild pitch by Rangers starter Yu Darvish. That would be as far as Yelich would get as Darvish retired the next three Miami batters in order.
Darvish (7-2, 2.11 ERA) has been the Rangers best pitcher this season by far and he certainly looked the part on Wednesday, picking up the complete game shutout. He allowed just six hits on the night, striking out ten Marlins while walking three. This was the first career complete game for Darvish and the ninth time this season that he lasted at least seven innings.
The Rangers threatened in the second when Adrian Beltre led off the inning with a double and then advanced to third on a wild pitch by Marlins starter Jacob Turner. Beltre would get stranded at third as Turner sat down the next three Rangers hitters he faced.
2014 has been a great season for Beltre and he's been on fire of late. He went 2-4 from the plate, making this his fifth straight game with at least two hits.
The third inning wouldn't go as smooth for Turner as Texas loaded the bases off a leadoff walk and a pair of hits. Shin-Soo Choo would then break out of an 0 for 18 slump with a double down the right field line, scoring all three base runners to give the Rangers a 3-0 lead. Choo would score on a wild pitch two batters later as Texas plated four runs in the inning.
Turner's final inning would be the fourth as he allowed a one out single to Leonys Martin and then balked him to second. The next batter was Chris Gimenez and he singled home Martin before Turner got the final two outs of the inning.
The loss dropped Turner to 2-4 on the season and raised his ERA to 6.38. He allowed six hits and five runs, all earned, in four innings of work while striking out four.
Choo picked up his fourth RBI of the night after he singled home Elvis Andrus in the fifth inning.
The Marlins now head back to Miami and will begin a 10-game homestand on Friday when the Pittsburgh Pirates come to town for a weekend series.
Nathan Eovaldi (4-2, 3.27 ERA) will get the nod for Miami. The Pirates have yet to name a starter for the series opener.
