QUEENS (CBSMiami/AP) – The Miami Marlins may be coming out of their early season funk but to continue that they'll have to beat one of the hottest teams in baseball.
The New York Mets are on the verge of their longest winning streak in nearly two years, despite David Wright going on the disabled list.
After taking their first game without Wright, the Mets will again look to Lucas Duda and Travis d'Arnaud to pick up the slack when they face the Marlins on Thursday night.
New York (6-3) is looking to win five straight for the first time since May 26-30, 2013 after beating Philadelphia 6-1 on Wednesday. The Mets placed Wright on the 15-day DL with a hamstring injury before the game.
"I look at (Wednesday's) game as a very big game for us with the loss of David," manager Terry Collins said. "I wanted to see how the guys came out. They came out this afternoon ready to go."
That was certainly true for Duda and d'Arnaud, who combined for four hits with two homers and three RBIs. Eric Campbell went 1 for 5 while starting at third for Wright.
Duda has gone 9 for 22 with four doubles in five games and has driven in five runs over the past two, while d'Arnaud is 10 for 30 with eight RBIs in eight contests.
D'Arnaud has a .346 average in 15 career meetings with Miami (3-6).
Campbell, who appeared at six positions in 85 games as a rookie last year, should get the nod at third again. He's 3 for 14 (.214) in eight games against the Marlins.
Dillon Gee takes the ball looking to rebound from a poor performance in his season debut. Four of the five runs the right-hander allowed came in his final inning - the fifth - in Saturday's 5-3 loss at Atlanta.
He's gone at least five innings in 47 straight starts for the longest active streak in the majors.
Gee has lasted at least five in each of his six starts against the Marlins, going 3-1 with a 2.84 ERA. The defeat came in the most recent matchup Sept. 17, when he allowed three runs in the first two innings before settling down and yielding one more over the next 4 2-3 of a 4-3 home loss.
The Marlins are starting to turn it around after a sluggish start, winning two straight. They beat Atlanta 6-2 on Wednesday as Adeiny Hechavarria homered for one of his three hits and collected three RBIs on his 26th birthday.
The shortstop has been on a tear, going 7 for 11 in the past three games after enduring a 1-for-22 slump through the first six. He's gone 11 for 31 in his last nine games against the Mets.
Jarred Cosart takes the mound after being the hard-luck loser in a 2-0 defeat to Tampa Bay on Saturday. The right-hander pitched six innings of one-run ball but Miami was two-hit.
"I liked his focus. He was really locked in," manager Mike Redmond told MLB's official website. "If he pitches like that, we'll win a lot of those games. I was really happy with the way he pitched."
Cosart allowed two runs over six innings and didn't get a decision in a 6-5 road win in his only career start against the Mets on Sept. 15.
