Marlins Facing Questions After Dismal Start To Season

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – The Miami Marlins have a very big week ahead of them.

That may seem strange considering the season is only two weeks old, but that is the case with manager Mike Redmond's Marlins.

Coming into the season there were high expectations surrounding the ballclub.

They signed Giancarlo Stanton to the biggest contract in pro sports history and followed that up by adding several veteran pieces that were supposedly filling all the needs that the Marlins had after their 2014 campaign.

With many baseball minds picking Miami as a Wild Card team and possible pennant contender, it seemed as though Marlins fans were in store for a fun and exciting season.

After thirteen games however, the season has been anything but fun and exciting.

Coming off of a 4-game sweep at the hands of the New York Mets, the Marlins are sitting with a dismal 3-10 record and are already facing questions about whether this newly put together squad would be a bust.

It's difficult to put your finger on one thing that needs to be fixed because there are several areas that Miami is struggling.

Starting pitchers have been grossly underachieving, with each having trouble making it past the fourth or fifth inning.

The bullpen hasn't been much better, with the unit holding a 4.91 ERA which is good for last in the National League and 29th out of 30 teams in the majors.

Though the Marlins do have three wins, they have yet to give closer Steve Cishek a save opportunity.

The problems have been clearly with the players and their lack of production but that hasn't stopped the chatter about Miami already needing to make a change with their manager.

Players have said multiple times how much they enjoy playing for Redmond and his efforts were praised last season for leading the Marlins to a strong season that kept them in playoff contention until mid-September.

Still, if management wants changes and feels the need to shake things up there aren't exactly a lot of options when the season is only a couple weeks old.

Perhaps the threat of losing their manager will light the fire inside the Marlins players that Stanton has already publicly said was missing.

Either way, something has to change with these players because they are much better than their record shows.  At least they should be.
