Margate Toddler Pulled From Pool, Rushed To Hospital
FT LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami) – A Margate toddler was rushed to the hospital after she was pulled from the family's pool.
"She screamed, I ran outside and saw the baby in her hand," said Sabita Rahim. "It's a terrifying scene, a baby found face down in the family pool with no signs of life."
Margate police said 16-month old Savita, who was at home with her mother, somehow fell into the pool behind their home at 6122 Southgate Boulevard. The child's mother pulled her out
"She said mommy take the baby from me," said Rahim. "When I blew into her mouth I could hear some bubbling but I didn't see her regaining consciousness, I didn't see anything."
"Margate Fire Rescue responded, started CPR and transported the child to the hospital," said Margate police Sgt. Lori Ellen.
The child was taken to Northwest Medical Center.
Police said they are not sure how the child ended up in the pool or how long she was in the water.
Rahim said she was taking a nap and thinks her daughter may have dozed off while taking care of another child, a one month old. She said Savita slipped out through a sliding glass door in the rear of the house which opened up onto the pool area.
Neighbors watched as paramedics worked desperately to save the child.
"The lady was crying, the guy was strong enough, but sad," said Wilkes Adolph.
Rahim's said at one point all hope was lost but then a miracle happened.
"Because they told us the child is gone but then they called from the hospital after five minutes and said they have a heartbeat," said Rahim.
Police said the child was in critical condition.
