Man dies after being electrocuted in NW Miami-Dade by falling wire, police say

MIAMI -- Police were investigating the death of a man who was killed after being electrocuted by falling wires when a transformer blew in northwest Miami-Dade, authorities said.

Rescue workers were called to 830 NW 73rd Street around 5:45 a.m. for a possible electrocution.

When paramedics arrived, they found the body of the man, who was in his 60s. He was pronounced dead at the scene, according to police.

Investigators said the man and another person were en route to work when the accident occurred and the power lines struck the man.

Police placed yellow crime scene tape around the site as they investigated the incident.

The man's identity was pending.

Florida Power & Light said the victim was not an FPL employee. They released the following statement to CBS News Miami about the death later Thursday morning:

"We are aware of a serious incident in Northwest Miami Dade. We extend our deepest condolences to the individual's family. Approximately 1,500 customers lost service, all but seven have been restored as police remain on scene. Please contact the Miami-Dade Police Department for more information regarding the investigation of the incident."
