MIAMI GARDENS (CBSMiami) – Authorities in Miami Gardens have arrested a man suspected of shooting and killing another man at a gas station on Saturday.
Emanuel Devon Hilton, 23, has been charged with second degree murder following the shooting death of Jared Jamal Simmons-Smith, 22 at an Exxon gas station in Miami Gardens.
According to police, the two men were customers at the gas station when they became involved in a physical altercation.
During the altercation, Smith pushed Hilton out of the store.
Hilton then re-entered with a firearm and shot one round, striking Smith.
Upon arrival at the scene, officers found Smith suffering from a gunshot wound and called in rescue units.
Miami-Dade Fire Rescue responded and pronounced Smith deceased.
Miami Gardens Police immediately began an investigation and a search for Hilton.
Later in the day Hilton surrendered at the Miami Gardens Police Department.
"He was a loving person," said Janet Smith, the victim's mother. "Everybody knew him, he grew up over here."
Upset and frustrated, others had a message for the killer.
"Stop the killing, this is ridiculous! Just killing people for nothing," said cousin Stephanie Daniels. "Don't even give a person a chance to live their life. To kill somebody in cold blood for no reason, I hope you don't sleep tonight!"
The family said Smith had his first child on the way.
