DAVIE (CBSMiami) – A Pompano Beach man is accused of carjacking a woman in front of a Davie crafts store.

It happened August 23rd, in the parking lot of the Tower Shops on University Drive.

The woman had just left the Michael's store and was getting into her Yukon Denali when she noticed a man standing in the doorway of the SUV.

That man, identified as 46-year old Timothy Williams, had his hand in his pocket and reportedly pressed a hard object against the woman's leg. He then told her "Do you feel that? Move over," according to his arrest report.

When the woman slid into the passenger seat, Williams reportedly got inside and told her he needed her help with his mother who was sick. The woman offered him her purse, credit cards and even to go to an ATM with him to withdraw money.

He refused all and told her not to worry because it would all be over in two and half hours. He then asked her to remove the battery from her cell phone. She told him she wasn't able to do that because she couldn't open the case.

William then reportedly put the SUV in reverse and began to back out of the parking spot. When a backup sensor went off, Williams got distracted and the woman used opportunity to make a break for it. Williams then drove off.

She called her husband who called the police. They were able to track down her phone utilizing an app on it.

A Davie police officer spotted the Denali and began following it. Williams drove to Ft. Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport where he was taken into custody. When they looked inside the SUV, police found a set of "brass knuckles" and small knife.

Williams was charged with carjacking and kidnapping in commission of a felony.

The episode at the popular mall served as a learning moment for some shoppers.

"You need to ready to protect yourself.  You should always be looking before getting into your car," said shopper Tom Rayhill.   "Always be looking around for what's going on in the parking lot and protect yourself."
