MIAMI (CBSMiami) -- Memorial Day weekend is right around the corner and that means many drivers are going to be hitting the roads.

According to AAA - nearly 34 million Americans are expected to drive to their destinations this Memorial Day which is about a two percent increase from last year and the reason is because of lower gas prices.

The company says the current national average is $2.31 a gallon. The national average is the highest gas prices have been this year so far but it's also the lowest Memorial Day gas prices in over a decade.

"Americans have a little bit of confidence with their spending money because of the lower gas prices and for hitting the road it's the perfect combination. We're predicting the second biggest since 2005," said AAA Field Manager Jack Simono.

The company said, altogether, more than 38 million Americans will travel this Memorial Day weekend, which is an increase of 700,000 people compared to a year before.
