S.Fla. Nigerians Send Message To Home Country
MIAMI (CBSMiami/AP) -- The Nigerian community in South Florida came together Saturday to send a message to those in Nigeria and around the world.
The move comes as there is growing international outrage over the failure of Nigeria's government to rescue 276 girls kidnapped by Islamic extremists.
"Whatever affects one person, it affects all of us and this is why we need the girls to be brought back to us," said Joseph Obadeyi of Nigeria. "It's really saddening that something like this would still be going on in the 21st century. This is not the way policy should be played and you know you will always have your bad apples in any society."
The girls were seized from a school on April 15 by Boko Haram, which seeks to impose Islamic law in the west African nation. That is despite the fact that Nigeria's population of 170 million is divided almost equally between Christians and Muslims.
The South Florida group says they're planning a rally for the girls, for the morning of Saturday, May 17th in Miami Gardens at Rolling Oaks Park.
They are encouraging anyone who attends to wear green or white which are the colors of the Nigerian flag.
