Local Leaders To Honor Miami Olympic Medalist
MIAMI (CBSMiami) -- Local leaders will honor a Miami native and Olympic speed skater who won a silver medal at the 2014 Sochi Olympics.
City of Miami Mayor Tomas Regalado and City Commissioner Frank Carollo will honor Cuban-American Eddy"The Jet" Alvarez for winning the medal back in February for the 5,000-meter speed skating relay.
Alvarez was born and raised in Miami, the area of The Roads where he first learned to skate.
Regalado and Carollo will present the Keys to the City as well as a Proclamation recognizing his contribution to the community.
"Eddy Alvarez is one of Miami's favorite sons and we are honored to recognize this wonderful athlete that represents the vitality and energy of the City of Miami," stated Mayor Regalado.
"Eddy's hard work and dedication attest that anything is possible. He has brought pride and joy to his hometown of Miami," said Carollo.
Alvarez is the second South Floridian to win silver in the 2014 Sochi Olympics.
The ceremony is set for Friday at 3:00 p.m. at Miami City Hall.
