LeBron On MLS: "Hopefully We Can Make It Really Good"
MIAMI (CBSMiami) – While an official announcement on a new Major League Soccer franchise in South Florida hasn't been made, Miami Heat superstar LeBron James certainly sounded like it was all but a done deal when asked about it Thursday.
"I think it could be great (soccer in Miami). We'll see what happens," James said. "I think Miami is a great place for soccer. There's so many great athletes that come from South Florida, Florida in general, and you know, the lower coast. Hopefully we can make it really good."
LeBron has been rumored to be a part of the team of investors being put together by international soccer icon David Beckham. The retired soccer legend is negotiating with Miami-Dade County to build a soccer-only stadium for a new Miami MLS team.
Beckham has the right to purchase a new MLS franchise for just $25 million and he has reportedly closed in on Miami as the new soccer team's home.
LeBron himself is no stranger to the world of soccer, or futbol. In 2011, James struck a deal with Fenway Sports Group that allowed the Heat superstar to purchase a minority stake in the club, Liverpool FC. So if a Miami MLS team was established, could King James become a very-involved owner?
"I'm not a soccer major, but I know talent and if they want my advice, I will give my advice, which I have some to give. Being with the Liverpool Football Club for the last three years has helped me learn a lot about personnel and team structure of that nature. I'm going to continue to learn."
