MIAMI (CBSMiami) -- Thousands of Miami-Dade county students are taking their education to the next level.

Miami-Dade Public Schools selected about 2,000 students in 18 county elementary schools to be part of the initiative to eliminate the digital divide in local schools.

The chosen students got a computer device with four years of free internet access.

With that, they'll use the computers at their homes to practice their reading and math skills.

Miami Dade Public Schools Superintendent Alberto Carvalho has been a heavy supporter of the initiative and taking it to social media.

The local project is part of the White House initiative called ConnectED meant to help students extend their learning beyond the classroom.
