MIAMI BEACH (CBSMiami) -- If you're not first you're last, right?

"Hell yeah! I mean, yes," said Gina Gutierrez, right up front. "I'm excited!"

Hundreds stood behind her in line to get the iPhone X at the South Beach Apple Store on Lincoln Rd. For Sheena Van Dyke, being second in line wasn't a bad consolation prize and included all the bragging rights.

"It's very important," she said. "I get all of them, iPhone 8 and iPhone 7, iPhone 6... I get all of them! So I had to have the 10."

Lines began in the early hours of the morning with some staying overnight and some coming from the other side of the world, all to spend $1,000 on the new gadget.

"I come 12,000 miles away from Africa," said Ased Mahiou. "But I don't buy for myself, I buy for my wife."

Whether it's for you or a soon-to-be very happy spouse, the new iPhone X includes facial recognition and a higher quality screen.

"Feels awesome, feels so much better than the other one," said one happy customer.

Employers beware, though. Expect a dip in productivity for the new iPhone X owners.

"I'm stoked man," said another. "So I'm gonna be at work all day playing on it, I'm sure I'm not gonna get anything done. It's gonna be awesome!"

The iPhone X comes a decade after the original iPhone, the product that powered Apple's rise to become the world's biggest technology company with a market capitalization of $862 billion. Apple's Chief Executive Tim Cook billed the new glass-and-stainless-steel device as "the biggest leap forward since the original iPhone."

Presales started last week and the phone is expected to quickly sell out. Critics have slammed Apple for the high price tag, but many early reviews have been positive.
