Cameras Key To Solving Garbage Truck Crash Off I-95 Ramp

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – City of Miami officials are hoping the cameras on one of their waste trucks will explain how it flew off an I-95 ramp on Monday.
A crew from the state Department of Transportation was busy hauling off large chunks of concrete from the 7th Street exit ramp off I-95 on Tuesday.
The mess was made by a garbage truck that plunged about 100 feet onto Jose Marti Park.
It's still unknown what caused the bizarre accident, but officials said that could change.
The truck was equipped with two cameras that may have recorded the accident.
"The equipment is supposed to record any incident where you slam on the brakes or something like that," said Miami City Manager Daniel Alfonso.
The camera system's hard drive is being shipped to San Diego in hopes of retrieving images from inside the truck's cab.
In the meantime, Kaseem Smith's coworkers at the City of Miami can't believe he survived.
"It's a miracle that he's still breathing. We are happy and a sign that God has him under his grace and his loving care," said AFSCME Local 871 President Joe Simmons Jr.
Also a miracle, there was no one in that part of the usually busy park when the truck came crashing down.
On an average afternoon, there can be up to 100 kids in that park.
Monday was a slow day because it was a holiday and there was no after school program.
Officials hope to reopen the park Wednesday morning.
