In Florida's "Beer War," The Growler Appears To Be Winning

TALLAHASSEE (AP) — After a two-year political and public relations battle, the war over the half-gallon, refillable jug of craft beer known as a growler may finally be coming to an end.

A bill that's expected to pass in the Florida Legislature would legalize the 64-ounce growler that's now allowed in every other state.

In the past, beer distributors have sought to tack on regulations that craft brewers say would stifle their growth.

The distributors say such regulations are necessary to prevent large breweries from monopolizing the market, but they could have also forced craft breweries to sell their product to distributors before consumers could buy them at breweries.

Legislators credit grass-roots pressure from craft beer lovers for turning the tide on the legislation.
