MIAMI (CBSMiami) – An armed carjacker might be handcuffs, but I-95 drivers are still feeling the effects.
It all began with a carjacking at 11th Avenue and 28th Street early Wednesday night.
Miami police said two men threatened the victim with a gun and forced them out of their car. They then headed to I-95 north near NW 69th Avenue.
Investigators told CBS4's Tiani Jones the carjacker spotted a police car and started speeding away. That's when they lost control, hitting several vehicles on I-95.
"(You hear) the glass breaking and then you just hear more tires screech. I guess people trying to stop," a witness told Jones. "And then you hear the police, and then all of a sudden, and you just see police run off the expressway with their guns drawn, dogs, everything. And they blocked off the back streets."
The men jumped out of the stolen car and ran.
All night police have been searching on the ground and in the air. They even shut down the highway for several hours.
They were able to catch up with one of those suspects.
"We're processing the vehicle, as far as ID and getting prints and everything," explained Miami Police Officer Frederica Burden.
The witness said she believes she saw one of the suspects limping. She thinks he may have actually jumped off an overpass to get away from police.
As for the victims hit by the carjackers, police said they are OK.
"There was a three-car accident. Fortunately, no serious injuries. We had rescue respond and rescue was looking at all three of the victims," Burden said.
The search continues for the second man believed to be armed.
