MIAMI (CBSMiami) – In 16 games on Thursday to start the NCAA Tournament, seven lower-seeded teams won. March Madness, indeed. But #3 seed Miami beat Buffalo 79-72 in the first round and moves onto their second game of the tournament on Saturday on CBS.
Angel Rodriguez had 24 points and Sheldon McClellan 20 to lead five Miami players in double figures. The duo combined to hit 19 of 24 free throws in the foul-plagued game.
Tonye Jekiri said Buffalo was a tough test and it took a team effort. The same type of effort they'll have to take into their next match.
"We have great guys who kind of make good passes and cut to the basket and spot up for wide-open threes," Jekiri said. "Yeah, it's just going to help me and the team to go in and out during the game, and that's what we got from Buffalo, so we're looking forward to Wichita."
Miami will now face 11th-seed Wichita State on Saturday at 12:10 p.m. at the Dunkin' Donuts Center in Providence, R.I.
"We feel very fortunate to be here in Providence and playing tomorrow afternoon against an outstanding Wichita State team. We're very familiar with Gregg Marshall and the fantastic job he's done at Wichita State. Right now, according to Ken Pom statistics, they're the No. 1 defensive team in the country, and that obviously is something that we're going to have to address with our players as to how to attack them and how to score against their defense," said head coach Jim Larranaga.
The game will air on CBS and 560 WQAM.
