TALLAHASSEE (CBSMiami/NSF) - After a recount showed a 53-vote difference between the candidates, the Florida House rejected an election challenge filed by Republican David Rivera and seated Democrat Robert Asencio in Miami-Dade County's House District 118.

Rivera, a former state House member and congressman, alleged that votes had gone uncounted.

But Rep. Larry Metz, the newly appointed chairman of the House Public Integrity & Ethics Committee, requested that the House reject Rivera's challenge to seating Asencio. The request was approved without debate.

With the decision, Republicans hold 79 House seats, while Democrats hold 41 after the November 8th elections.
