Horrific Mass Shooting In Orlando Unfolds Through Social Media

ORLANDO (CBSMiami) – News of the horrific nightclub attack in Orlando that killed at least 50 people spread very quickly over social media with the general public posting what they heard and what they saw.

Video posted on Instagram is making the rounds on social media and websites.  In the video, you see a number of police cruisers and what sounds like gun shots presumably between officers responding to the scene and the gunman Omar Mateen.

CBS4's Vanessa Borge also found Mateen on social media. He had a My Space page with a number of photos of himself.

Pulse nightclub posted a chilling sentence on Facebook right after the shooting began at 2 a.m. saying, "everyone get out of pulse and keep running."

As the gunman held hostages during the bloody siege that left at least 50 people dead, witnesses tweeted that they were hiding in the hopes that they could escape alive.

Twitter user @bjoewolf  posted, "Omg. Shooting at pulse. We hid in the bathroom. And we can't find our friends."

Another user @Lakecitymedman was also inside Pulse at the time of the shooting and tweeted, "Walking to Orlando Regional Medical Center now. I'm ok. Friend got shot. I've never seen so much blood and mayhem or been so scared ever."

Social media has also seen an outpouring of support from across the world.  A GoFundMe page was created to help raise funds for the victims of the Pulse shooting.

At last check Sunday evening, nearly $700, 000 had been raised on that GoFundMe page.
