HOMESTEAD (CBSMiami) -- An investigation is now under way in Homestead after a man was killed by a pack of dogs.

It happened nearly three weeks ago at a property off of S.W. 309th Street and 229th Avenue.

Miami-Dade Animal Services says the animals in question are a mixed breed between a Belgian Malinois and an American Bulldog.

According to the police report, the victim's girlfriend called police after the attack.

When rescue units arrived, they found the victim, Manuel Mejia, suffering from opened flesh wounds and multiple bites all over his body.

Mejia was rushed to Kendall Regional Medical Center with life-threatening injuries, where he died.

The animals, said to be at least 11 of them, remain at the property -- something that concerns at least one neighbor, who says he's seen the dogs out on the loose before.

"These dogs should not be there," said Renier Aleman, who only spoke in Spanish. "They should take them away and put them somewhere because they are dangerous."

Animal Services has released a statement that read, in part: "The owner of the dogs is fully cooperating with authorities. Additional information will be released as it becomes available."
