Classes Canceled Monday After Deadly Shooting Near Hollywood Elementary School

HOLLYWOOD (CBSMiami) – Classes were canceled at a Hollywood elementary school on Monday following a shooting in a nearby neighborhood.

According to Hollywood PD, the shooting took place in the area of 73 Avenue and Johnson Street around 6:00 a.m.

"Right at 6:47 a.m. we heard shots rang out and it was recorded on our security cameras," said neighbor Ron Lumpkin.

His surveillance video also appeared to show a car racing from the scene heading west on Johnson Street.

A couple blocks west on Johnson, a car crashed into a home.

The man who lives in the home was inside sleeping at the time. He's grateful he was not in a front room.

"I think that the bomb," said the man, who didn't want his identity revealed. "I hear boom. When I came out, I saw two guys, they open the car door and they run."

Police had the area blocked off with a lot of evidence cones on the ground. Investigators will not say if the scene is related.

"We established a perimeter because we believed at the time that the suspect could possibly be in that area we deploy canine and use our resources," said Hollywood police officer Christian Lata.

Doorbell video showed two people police want to speak to.

"The video is in reference to two individuals who at this time are considered armed and dangerous and two individuals or people of interest in this investigation," Lata said.

In the meantime, Boulevard Heights Elementary School was on code red lockdown due to the police activity in the area, according to Broward County Schools officials.

Students who were already dropped off or on a bus were taken to McArthur High where parents picked up their kids. Classes were then canceled for Boulevard Heights Elementary students.
