FT LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami) - Bond has been set a million dollars for a man accused in a deadly hit and run accident in Oakland park.
Scott Roman, 47, is charged with failure to remain at the scene of an accident involving a death and tampering with evidence. He was arrested at his Ft. Lauderdale home on Monday.
On May 11th, Joe Deverson was riding his go-ped in the 3100 block of Powerline Road around 10:45 p.m. when he was struck by a white BMW reportedly driven by Roman.
Witnesses said the car sped off after the accident. Deverson later died at the hospital due to his injuries.
Roman's arrest came after deputies recovered the BMW they said he was driving when he hit Deverson thanks to a tip.
An employee of The Palms condominium on N. Ocean Boulevard, who remembered hearing about the hit and run accident on the news, saw a white BMW 6 Series vehicle return to the Palms with damage to the front, passenger side of the car. He called the sheriff's office.
The BMW that was towed from The Palms two days later was missing the passenger-side mirror that was left at the scene and had damage to the lower front grill and quarter panel. Deputies said Roman had asked a condo employee to make arrangements to have his vehicle repaired.
Investigators say they have surveillance video showing Roman's BMW leaving the upscale Palms Condo in Fort Lauderdale before the crash and returning after the crash with damage to his vehicle. Specifically, detectives say they found car parts at the scene missing from a BMW.
CBS 4 News is also told the surveillance video shows Roman was the only person in the car leaving and entering the condo.
Sheriff's detectives said it's possible the BMW driver did not see the Go-Ped, which is not considered a legal vehicle to operate on a Florida road.
If the driver had remained on scene, he or she may not have faced any charges in the crash, investigators say.
