Heavy Rains Flood Parts Of W Miami-Dade Neighborhood

DORAL (CBSMiami) – After heavy storms in a West Miami-Dade neighborhood, the water is rising, and so are frustrations.

Neighbors in the West Miami-Dade neighborhood said the flooding occurs every time there is a heavy rain. The rising waters often causes some of the streets to become impassable.

"We've been here 30 years and it's getting worse," said Maria Kattan. "It used to get flooded—not that much. I would say it's been five years that it's worse."

Residents say they don't know why the increased flooding occurs and that they've heard different reasons from Miami-Dade County; from poor drainage, to suddenly being told they live in a floodplain and need flood insurance.

"We just got a notice in mail saying we have to pay the flood insurance," said Issac Seonae, a resident.

At $400 a year, Seonae says he is not happy about it.

Aside from the added expense of flood insurance, the flooding is also a nuisance when residents have to take alternate routes just to get to their house.

Raphael Sosa, a resident in the area, wants the county to resolve the issue.

"I don't know how. I'm not an engineer. I'm a musician so what can I say? Can I play piano for you," Sosa said.
