MIAMI (CBSMiami) – Miami Heat All-Star forward Chris Bosh remains in the hospital being treated for blood clots, a condition which will make him miss the rest of the NBA season.
One of Bosh's teammates understands what he is going through and is speaking about how he dealt with the same thing.
The situation was an under the radar thing for Udonis Haslem, but he dealt with the same condition four years ago so Bosh's ordeal certainly hits close to home.
Bosh can now manage a smile from the hospital, relieved to know that he'll be fine.
In 2011, Haslem developed a blood clot in his lung after undergoing foot surgery. His recovery took six months.
Haslem that year returned in time to give the Heat a lift in the playoffs, on their way to the NBA Finals.
Haslem recalls that dealing with the blood clots was no joke.
"I thank god that my wife got me to go to the hospital," Haslem recalls. "As an athlete and an alpha male we always feel like we'll be alright, just give it a minute and it'll be better tomorrow, but it was one of the worst pains I've ever felt. I just couldn't breathe and it was very very uncomfortable."
Other NBA players, like Cleveland's Anderson Varejao, also recovered from the same condition.
"I'm happy that I was able to catch mine and that those guys were able to catch theirs," said Haslem. "Because there's situations where those things can be fatal."
The Heat's Dwyane Wade says that when players suffer deep bruises or undergo surgery, he hopes that NBA teams are more proactive in monitoring the threat of blood clots.
The Heat said on Monday that they expect Bosh to be released from the hospital sometime during the week.
"We don't know the exact date yet," said Heat coach Erik Spoelstra. "He's getting a little bit better."
