Heat Star Dwyane Wade Grants Cancer Patient's Last Wish
MIAMI (CBSMiami) - If you knew your time left on earth was numbered what would you do with the days you had left?
Glenda Martinez, turning 80-years-old this year, found out on Christmas she may have only a few weeks left to live due to a cancerous brain tumor.
Glenda, knowing her days are numbered, told her family that she wants nothing more than to meet her favorite Miami Heat Player, Dwyane Wade, whom she's followed for years and whose picture hangs on the wall of her bedroom.
"I love them," she said." Wade is my favorite." "At my age, there aren't many more things to be passionate about," she said with a huge smile.
Tuesday night, before the Miami Heat beat the New Orleans Pelicans at the AAA, Glenda made her first-ever visit to the arena.
"Excellent," she beamed. "Beautiful" as her family pushed her in a wheel chair to a special seating area overlooking the court.
A few minutes earlier, Glenda got the chance to meet Dwyane Wade outside the locker room.
Her face radiated with joy as the two exchanged pleasantries. Glenda told Wade that she is his, "fan number one."
"I wish that the good Doctors we have here in Miami take good care of you as they take care of me," she told Wade.
The Heat's #3 couldn't have been more gracious, signing a basketball, posing for photos, even giving her a kiss.
"Enjoy the game," Wade said with a smile, touching her on the shoulder as he walked back into the locker room.
Glenda's daughter, Glenda Nunez, said her mother is amazing.
"She's got such a positive attitude. I don't know if you heard her but she kept saying to all of us no tears!"
So, as per Glenda's request, no tears but all smiles as the family headed off to watch the game together.
Glenda sat wearing her Wade's jersey and clutching the basketball Wade had signed for her.
"Excellent this night. Couldn't be any better," she said.
