Nine people in Margate home exposed to carbon monoxide sent to the hospital
FORT LAUDERDALE - Nearly a dozen people were taken to hospitals early Thursday for possible carbon monoxide poisoning in Margate.
According to the Margate Fire Department, they received a call around 2:30 a.m. about an unresponsive person in a home at 4975 SW 5th Court, in Margate Estates.
"Crews arrived and they found a generator being used inside the house. Crews did a good job of airing the house out. The had nine patients total, five adults and four juveniles," said Margate Fire Marshall David Scholl.
Multiple law enforcement departments and a hazmat team were called out to assist in the investigation.
Raul Pedraza lives across the street and was suprised to residents of the home being taken away on gurneys.
"I saw them before that, lighting the house with their phones. I figured that they didn't have power," he said.
"I cannot stress enough not to use a portable generator inside a home. They were all suffering from carbon monoxide poisoning," said Scholl.
The nine people were taken to area hospitals. Family members said they appeared to be okay.
