Google Expands Emojis for Women, Who Use Them More Than Anyone

MIAMI (CBSMiami) -- On average, girls around the world send over a billion emojis a day, making women the leading users of emojis. Emoji is finally about to depict what the 21st century workforce actually looks like.

In May, Google proposed new emojis to the Unicode Technical Committee that would include "a new set of emojis that represents a wide range of professions for women and men with a goal of highlighting the diversity of women's careers and empowering girls everywhere."

Yesterday, the Unicode Emoji Subcommittee agreed to add the new professional emojis. The new set of emoji will feature both men and women as professionals with all different skin tones.

The emojis are going to depict women in professional roles, compared to the current emojis that only depict woman as brides or princesses. The new emojis will feature a wide variety of professions including: doctors, scientists, teachers and construction workers.

The hope for this initiative is to empower women all over the world.

Google's employees were not the first to point out the inequality issue in emoji.  Always', Like a Girl campaign also created a public debate focusing on the lack of woman professionals in the emoji world. This campaign created an international plea for diversity in emojis, which even led to the United States' First Lady tweeting her opinion on the subject.
