MIAMI (CBSMiami) - It's a somber day for people of the Jewish faith as they observe Yom HaShoah (Holocaust Remembrance Day).
"Today we remember the lives of the six million Jews and millions of others who perished under the Nazi regime during the Holocaust. We also honor those who survived, and the brave heroes who stood up against hatred and brutality, often risking their lives to save others," said Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz in a statement.
Thursday morning five members of Israel's Knesset (Parliament) took part in a candle lighting ceremony at the Holocaust Memorial Miami Beach.
Thursday afternoon the Parliament members will take part in a Holocaust Remembrance Day program at the Scheck Hillel Community School. In the evening they are scheduled to attend a special memorial program at the Beth Torah Congregation.
The Holocaust Survivor's Club of Century Village Boca Raton will be hosting a Holocaust Remembrance Day at the Temple Beth Shalom.
Last month, Governor Rick Scott has signed off on a plan to create a Holocaust memorial at the Capitol.
In addition to be Holocaust Remembrance Day, Thursday is also the 65th annual National Day of Prayer.
The National Day of Prayer, which is held on the first Thursday of May, invites people of all faiths to pray for the nation. Created by a joint resolution of Congress in 1952, it was signed into law by President Harry S. Truman.
