TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (CBSMiami/AP) — The future Florida Senate president promises to boost the status of the state's public universities.
Senate Republicans are scheduled Wednesday to formally designate Sen. Joe Negron as their nominee for Senate president. Negron will assume his post in November 2016 if Republicans hold on to their majority.
Negron, a 54-year-old attorney from Stuart, plans to outline his top priorities after the vote.
He says one of his main goals will be to elevate Florida's public universities to the same elite status as schools in North Carolina and Michigan. Two of Negron's three children attended state universities.
One of Negron's other top priorities will be to do more projects to prevent polluted water from being released from Lake Okeechobee into adjacent water bodies such as the Indian River Lagoon.
