Four Krop High Students Receive Silver Knight Awards
NORTH MIAMI (CBSMiami) - It's one of the highest awards in the country given to high school students.
The Silver Knight Awards were handed out Tuesday night to incredible kids in our community, and one local high school had four recipients.
Susan Bean is one of four students from Dr. Michael M. Krop Senior High School honored with the award.
"When I was six days old, I was given up for adoption, and I was placed in a box," said Bean.
She was abandoned and left in a box in front of a Chinese post office. Bean was eventually adopted by a Jewish family from Miami.
As a teenager, she returned to China to volunteer with Chinese orphans.
"Most people find it very entertaining that I can't speak any Chinese or Mandarin, but I speak some Hebrew," Bean said.
The 17-year-old raised thousands of dollars for the orphanage that cared for her. Extraordinary community service is one of the reasons Bean won the prestigious Silver Knight Award.
Tuesday night she, along with 30 high school students, four of which are students at Krop as well, were picked from a large pool of smart and qualified applicants. The winners from Krop high school are all seniors, on their way to prestigious colleges with big dreams—like Brett alexander. He wants to go into politics and joked about being the first Jewish president of the United States.
Brett started a program in his school that pairs incoming freshmen with older students who act as mentors. Ross Daniel taught senior citizens how to use the internet. Clarissa Buch documented the stories and hardships of LGBTQ kids.
I feel like there's a lot of struggles that people go through that you can't see on the surface," said Buch.
Buch is headed to the University of Missouri where she plans on majoring in journalism.
