Suspect sought in shooting, carjacking near Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport

FORT LAUDERDALE - An investigation is underway after a shooting involving a Broward sheriff's deputy and a carjacking near Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport.

According to the sheriff's office, the shooting happened around 5 a.m. near the 1400 block and North Perimeter Road. They did not say what led to it.

BSO is looking for 33-year-old Leandro Fernandez Sanchez in connection with the case.

Following the shooting, the sheriff's office said the "subject carjacked a Broward County paratransit bus called TOPS, removing the bus operator, and subsequently fled the area." There were no passengers on the bus at the time.

They're on the look out for that bus still.  It is bus 309 with Florida Tag TI0261.

Chopper4 over the scene spotted a Mercedes-Benz sedan with more than a dozen bullet holes in its windshield and driver's side door.

If you have information about the bus or Fernandez's whereabouts, call Broward Crimestoppers at 954-493-tips.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement will investigate the deputy use of force aspect of the case, which is standard.
