MIAMI (CBSMiami) – Former Florida State football player De'Andre Johnson is telling his story for the first time since his arrest for punching a woman in the face at a Tallahassee bar.

That arrest, and surveillance video of the incident, led to him being kicked off the Seminoles football team.

Now, Johnson is not making any excuses.

He says he deeply regrets the incident that got him kicked off the team.

By now, the whole nation has seen this time and again.

Surveillance video from that Tallahassee bar shows Johnson's confrontation with a female student from Florida State.

He says she kneed him in the groin before taking a swipe at him.

Johnson reacted by punching her in the face. Now he is facing a misdemeanor battery charge.

On Monday, with his mother by his side, Johnson talked about the episode with former NFL player Michael Strahan.

After a second FSU player, Dalvin Cook, was accused of hitting another woman, FSU reportedly banned its players from going to bars anywhere.

The school says athletes will be made aware that the actions of a few can ruin the university's reputation.
