MIAMI (CBSMiami) – Former CIA pilot Juan Peron, who took on Cuban expeditionary forces in the Congo, says he and his family will not miss a rally being put on by Cuban exile organizations in Miami.
"My whole family, three sisters, my brother-in-law, everybody is going over there," he said.
After the Bay of Pigs, Castro sent troops and Che Guevara to Africa to expand the Cuban revolution.
The CIA sent Cuban pilots, seasoned infantry and sailors to man swift boats on the Congo's Lake Tanganyika.
The end result: Guevara fled the Congo and the county was secured from the threat of a Cuban/communist takeover.
Peron, like many others of his generation, battled Castro whenever and wherever.
"Every opportunity I had to fight against them, I would and I did," he said.
Peron was out of town when the former Cuban leader died.
He missed the action at the Versailles and La Carreta, but he and his wife, Julia, will be on Calle Ocho early Wednesday afternoon lamenting for those who have passed on.
"So many people would want, families who went through all of this for so many years, they are not here to enjoy it," Julia Peron said.
The Rally for Freedom and Democracy in Cuba will be held on Wednesday at 5 p.m. at the Bay of Pigs Memorial located on 8th Street and 13th Avenue.
