TALLAHASSEE (CBSMiami/AP) — Body cameras could be headed into one state prison as part of a pilot program under a bill passed by the Florida House.

The House passed a comprehensive prisons bill on Friday and sent it over to the state Senate.

The legislation comes in the wake of prison scandals that include suspicious inmate deaths and poor conditions.

The Florida Senate previously passed its own bill that called for creating an independent commission that could investigate future allegations of corruption or problems. But House leaders refused to go along with the proposal.

Rep. Carlos Trujillo said legislative leaders will instead create a joint legislative panel to provide additional oversight of prisons. But that idea is not included in the bill (SB 7020) passed by the Florida House.

Trujillo said the bill is a compromise reached with Senate Republicans involved in the issue.
