MIAMI (CBSMiami) - A group of fisherman had a close encounter of the Great White kind off the coast of Mayport, just east of Jacksonville.

Boat captain Chad Starling said he grabbed his cell phone after a Great White shark took a bite out of red snapper the were using as bait.

"He grabbed the fish, then there was an intense game of tug of war for a second, then he bit the chunk out of the top of the fish, killed it then took off and everybody was going crazy. That's when I got the phone out and started recording the video," said Starling.

Starling runs Team Buck Rogers Fishing Charter and was out with a small group on Saturday when it happened.

"I told the guys you never know what you're going to see out here on the ocean and that proved it," said Starling.

The boat was about 11 miles off shore when they spotted the shark.

"I estimated him to be about 12 feet long, very impressive," said Starling. "It's not something that we get to see here everyday."

"He probably stayed with the boat for at least 30 minutes," Starling added. "We were actually fighting him for two or three different times, he just kept harassing us and pulling fish off our lines."

Starling said he sees sharks all the time when he is out on the water but this was only the second time in the last 10 years that he spotted a Great White shark. He said the first sighting was last year and the shark just swam by the boat.
