MIAMI (CBSMiami) – The U.S. Senate race is heating up in Florida.

On Tuesday, GOP candidate Carlos Beruff swung by our newsroom.

The real estate developer is trying to unseat Marco Rubio, and is self-funding most of his campaign.

"If you want Washington to really get fixed, you better start throwing out the career politicians and changing the dynamic," he said. "I'm not looking for a career, I've already had one. I'm looking to do something that should be the only reason you go to Washington – it's public service, what a concept.

Polls show Beruff is behind, but he says he likes being the underdog.

The senate primary election will take place on August 30th.
